European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
